The World of Astley Baker Davies + Q&A (12A)
The work of Astley Baker Davies, including Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, is known around the world. This retrospective programme brings together highlights from Mark Baker and Neville Astley’s BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated artistic careers, including work made separately – The Hill Farm and the joyously upbeat Mobile Home – to work made together including the little known, but hilarious chivalric satire The Big Knights.
Although apparently made for a children’s audience, their later work (here represented by selections from Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly) is notable for its lightness of touch, humour, social satire, observation and an incredible ability to cut across social divides, whilst their earlier work demonstrates considerable sophistication as well as being informed by a deep craft and love for the art of animation.
Individual success was followed by joint success with their wildly successful TV series which came about when the duo were joined by animation producer Phil Davies in 2002. Peppa Pig has been sold to over 150 territories around the world winning a BAFTA in 2005, the series also won Best Pre-School Animation prize at the British Animation awards in 2006, won the top TV Crystal award at Annecy, picked up 3 awards at Cartoons on the bay including 2 Pulcinella awards and has been nominated for a further 3 times for children’s BAFTAs.
Event/ We will be joined by Phil Davies, producer of Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom for a Q&A chaired by Stephen Cavalier, animation director and author of A World History of Animation.
